Homestead - The Goldcoaster
Well, when I look at the map, it really looks like Florida City is the closest municipality but, who am I -- just a retired full-time RVer enjoying the lows in the 60s last night. I awoke this morning to see the full moon in my bedroom window and it began setting in the west as daylight began to break from the east -- that may have been about 6:15 or thereabouts. Had to get my binoculars for a clearer view of the yellowish orb and still didn't see the "man" peering back at me (or anyone else).
Arrived here around 4:00 pm and had most everything set by 5:00 pm after cleaning up a spilled dish of catfood that happened during the drive down -- and a broken martini glass in the freezer too (will have to buy another in case company should drop by sometime). This seems like a little oasis with its wall around the perimeter and a couple guarded gates to keep out some of the undesirables from the area surrounding it. The drive down Dixie Hwy (Rt. 1) took me through some neighborhoods that reminded me of the southwest neighborhoods of Denver that I grew up in -- mixed ethnic groups with splashes of color and "colorful places" offering "girly shows or boobs" (adult entertainment and bookstores, videos galore). Not on my list of things to see.
Tiger and Molly seem to be more interested in the surroundings here than in the past two places (Myrtle Beach and Flagler Beach). Since it is not as cold at night, I can leave a few small windows open for them to peer out at the community around us where it seems there are a number of retirees walking about (some stray cats too have their interest as well as the birds).
I pulled in just before another RV couple arrived to take the spot next to me -- haven't met them yet but, will be sure to catch up with them sometime today, if possible. I would have arrived 10 or 15 minutes earlier if I hadn't missed my turn off route 1 and ended up on the two lane road to Key Largo -- had to make a U-turn when I could and came back to the farthest SW Avenue or Street (344th) below Miami. When I passed it going south, I thought I just might should have taken it but, it is not an easy thing to swing the big rig (and the Jeep behind) in such short notice. The missed turn some 8 or 10 blocks north of SW 344th might have been taken if I could have found a "rest stop" somewhere on I-95 north of Miami to study my directions one more time. However, that rest stop didn't appear and the constant flow of traffic (like the DC area) kept me from pulling off on the shoulder to restudy things.
Once I reached the West Palm Beach area, it seemed there were endless concrete and asphalt roads in all directions -- six lanes in each direction on I-95 and another parallel roadway (visible just to the west) with 3 or 4 more lanes in each direction (presumably the toll road I wanted to avoid). There were also separate roadways for buses running parallel with Dixie Highway which seemed to command some flow of the traffic and any turns to the right that passed through them. So many lights and construction on Dixie Highway made it slow going and made me have second thoughts about avoiding the toll roads -- will study the map and see how many toll booths there really were.
Need to make the trip to the office and get officially checked-in and then make that first trip to the nearest Walmart (already mapped it out before I left Flagler Beach). It's supposed to be in the mid to high 70s here today and thereafter -- sounds like pool time this afternoon. Shuffleboard anyone?
